LWI Nature Based Solutions Capacity Building Presentation: Natural Channel Design (NCD) - A Nature Based Solution for Floodplain Management and Watershed Resiliency.

Gravity, nature, climatic events, and development can all impact the function of our water resource infrastructure. Understanding and applying natural stream form and function is critical to the sustainable management of our natural and man-made water conveyance systems. Whether the goal is to improve drainage or flood plain management, meet surface water quality goals, develop urban/suburban green corridors and linear parks, reduce long-term maintenance costs, restore critical aquatic and riparian habitat; NCD is emerging as the best practice for the sustainable management of these critical water resources infrastructure systems. NCD emulates natural river systems and was initially developed to help redirect the manner in which past traditional river works have impacted natural river systems.

SWCA will be providing an overview of Natural Channel Design methods and some example projects where they have applied NCD-based channel designs to manage, stabilize, and restore flood control channels and their tributaries.
